Who is Neymar Jr?
Neymar, full name Neymar da Silva Santos, Jr., (born February 5, 1992, Mogi das Cruzes, Brazil). He is a Brazilian football (soccer) player who is one of his country’s most prolific scorers.
Neymar began playing football as a child in So Vicente under the tutelage of his father, a former professional footballer who continues to be a close adviser and mentor to his son throughout his career.
Career
Neymar joined Portuguesa Santista’s youth club in So Vicente after playing street and indoor five-a-side football, and he and his family relocated to Santos in 2003. There, Neymar, who was already a talented player, joined Santos FC’s junior academy (the same club for which Brazilian football great Pelé spent most of his domestic career). At the age of 14, he had a successful trial with Real Madrid in Spain, and Santos had to raise its spending to keep him.
In 2009, he made his first team debut with Santos. He averaged a goal every other match while playing for Santos, and he helped the team win the Libertadores Cup (the most prestigious South American club competition) in 2011. Neymar’s numerous individual accolades at Santos include South American Footballer of the Year in 2011 and 2012.
Neymar signed a five-year contract with FC Barcelona in June 2013 following a trade with Santos for €57 million (about $76 million), one of the most expensive soccer moves in history. Two years later, he helped Barcelona win the “treble” of La Liga, Copa del Rey, and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League.
In August 2017, he arranged for a transfer to the French club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) for a then-record €222 million ($263 million). In addition to becoming PSG’s new face, Neymar also became the highest-paid player in the world, earning €45 million ($53 million) every year.
