The Lord of the Rings: Gollum’s Chapter Eight gives you a glimpse of just how treacherous Mirkwood can be, and it is a frightening place. To get to the location of Gwendil’s magic ritual, you and Mell will have to work out a number of puzzles and navigate your way through some trees.

The chapter begins by continuing forward until Mell instructs you to locate some lairel. Continue further as the trail curves to the right; a climbable tree with purple blooms will be on your left.
The Lairel can be retrieved by jumping ahead and up to the higher portion of the tree after climbing the vines counterclockwise around the trunk until you can support yourself on the branches. Return to the ground and deliver it to Mell.
Gollum and Smeagol will quarrel over whether or not to consume the lariel, as Mell suggests. The language describing the options is wrong, though, as Gollum prefers to take the medication while Smeagol prefers to reject it.
Wait for Mell to build a bridge over the river before continuing along the path. Go ahead and enter the caves, then proceed straight through. Lead Mell to the Bell Tower at the opposite end by climbing the slope.
Gather Food For Mell
Look around the artwork within before jumping to the platform above the depiction of the Eye of Sauron to begin climbing. Run up the wall you come across by crossing over to the broken platform in the room’s middle. Jump backwards while holding onto the ledge at the top.
Jump over to the little ledge on the other wall from there. Climb up and take the egg, then return and enter the tunnel that is to the right of the egg.
Use a running jump to go to the ledge opposite by the branch’s end. After the descent, proceed along the route, picking the big mushroom on your right. As you move on, turn right into the cave; towards the back, you can climb up and retrieve a snail.
Return to the main path and swing across to the trees using the swing bar. Climb through the branches to find a caterpillar, then continue walking to return to the hill’s foot. Bring the food you’ve gathered back to Mell.

After the cutscene, take the same escape route through the tower’s top. To remove a purple wisp that is obstructing the path, hurl a stone at a bell in the area. Backtrack down the hill through the trees, being careful to avoid hitting any of the wisps as you jump.
Return up the hill while ringing the bells to ward off wisps. Food will be available for you to gather as you ascend, allowing you to regain any lost health. Look to the right when two stationary wisps obstruct the path. Throw a rock at the bell beyond the third wisp, then begin climbing because it is blocking the swing bar that leads into the trees.
Take a running jump to the left and grab the trunk when you reach the first branch. Climb to the right after leaping to the ledge above. Drop gently onto the branch, then use it to climb back up to the hill. When there is a gap, race into the middle of the three wisps in front of you, then climb the wall beyond them.
A wisp then blocks a small passageway; follow it, wait for it to nudge upward, then duck under it. More trees can be climbed; the third branch up, which is rounded and difficult to land on, must be used to get to the climbing wall beyond it.
As you ascend to the left, stay close to the top of the wall to stay clear of the wisp. Jump backward and then down to Mell at the conclusion. Follow the route to the big tree in the next section, where Mell will be waiting to speak with you.
Solve the Ritual Stone Puzzle
The blue-highlighted trail should be followed using your enhanced senses. The blue route leads to a runestone at the eleven o’clock position around the tree (if noon is exactly behind Mell). First, check the tree for a broken staff. You must remember which elf cast the spell while standing in front of which stone.

Follow Mell through the purple mist once you’ve identified the right pattern. After Gollum and Smeagol fight about whether or not to kill Mell now that she has accomplished her goal, continue walking into the mist until another cutscene and the chapter’s conclusion are triggered.
